Adoption, adoption, adoption

Just a little background for those of you who don’t know:  We are in the process of adopting Jephte, a 14 year old boy from Haiti.  I met Jephte while in Port-au-Prince last May.  Our dossier is in IBESR in Haiti at the moment awaiting approval from the Haitian government to proceed with his adoption.

It costs a LOT to adopt internationally. There are the costs of preparing paperwork on the US side (about $2,000 so far).  There is the adoption fee ($9,000).  There is the cost of  visas, passport, etc.  (IDK for sure, but definitely a minimum of $1,200) Once the adoption is final, there is the cost of travel for both Jim and I to go to Haiti for all the necessary USCIS interviews and then bring him home. (At least $2,000 with airfare and hotel both stateside and in Port-au-Prince).  It’s a BIG chunk of change.

This morning, I’ve spent some time online trying to find adoption grants to apply for.  There is not a lot of help out there.  There are a lot of people who want to adopt, but not a lot of money to help out.  But, love requires sacrifice, right?  So, what I’ve done is research ways to raise money 0urselves.   I’m not sure what to do.  I’ve got lots of information to sort through.  I’ll keep you posted.

  1. This is unbelieveable. How sad to think about how much goes into all this, just to be able to give a young person a since of belonging. Whatever you guys do, DON’T GIVE UP.
